The easiest way to give your organisation a productivity boost

and the 4 other underestimated benefits of an office spring clean.

Share via:

Did you know a cheerful spring vibe can give your organisation a real energy boost? Think of all the positive consequences for productivity! But this is certainly not the only spin-off of a solid spring clean-up. It is a great gift for your clients and colleagues. Why? Let’s find out.

1. Your professional image

We all know the weird science behind the first impression. It takes only seconds for our brains to judge. So when your customers visit your organisation for the first time, you want to hit the right note in no-time.

Dirty dishes, overflowing rubbish bins and cluttered desks send a clear message: you’re overwhelmed or lacking in professionalism. In both cases, people could question whether your priorities are right, because a disorganized office can be at the expense of efficiency and effectiveness. And isn’t that exactly what your customers value? The spring clean is a good opportunity to align your office with your desired brand image.

2. Reduced absenteeism

Thanks to your cleaner, who visits your organisation thrice a week, the cleanliness in your organisation is fine, right? No way José, the facts say something else. Absenteeism is still a significant expense for employers. Did you know the average absence rate in the UK is 19 days per person, per year? Gosh, that's almost 4 work weeks! Of course, not all absence is related to office hygiene, but a significant portion is associated with colds, flu, stomach problems and food poisoning due to poor office hygiene. Time to hold our hands up and unleash a real cleaning revolution! Watch those sickness rates decrease.

3. Improved information security

Nobody wants a large-scale leak of customer data. But fortunately there are no chaotic desks or heaps of paperwork lying around in your organisation, right? Did you know that 43% of all data breaches (*Infosecurity Magazine) are related to insider threats, meaning security risks from within the organisation? Oops…

Your organisation could probably use a refresher course. A clean desk policy is the first step to getting your organisation data leak proof. Simply put, a clean desk policy means that at the end of the day, all desks are cleared. But the policy can cover more:

  • Place shredders next to each printer;
  • Provide (lockable) storage space;
  • Keep all keys safely locked away;
  • Make sure there are enough rubbish bins;
  • Keep your office free of excess paperwork, whether it’s confidential or not.

4. Increased productivity

"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk?" Hmm, ok. Einstein felt strongly about it: a cluttered desk stimulates creativity. But to what extent can it stimulate productivity as well?

Being more productive at work isn't rocket science, but it does require being more deliberate about how you manage your time. A clean desk is an effective start to increased productivity at work, because you:

  • don’t waste time looking for specific documents;
  • don’t have to make room to work;
  • are stimulated to digitise your work;
  • and won’t have any distractions from things that have no priority.

5. Happy colleagues

Spring is the best time of year to breathe fresh air and make colleagues enthusiastic for new ideas and initiatives. So if you want to dot your I’s and cross your T’s, take advantage of the positive atmosphere and give your organisation an extra energy boost. Put extra effort into creating a pleasant and clean working environment. Show that you care about the well-being of your colleagues and who knows: You may hear them singing a happy note soon ... just like the birds!
