Only one in four UK adults actually drink the recommended daily intake of water, according to research by SodaStream. The survey also revealed that 27% of UK adults aren’t aware of how much they should drink each day, and 52% prefer to drink tea and coffee.  

While it may seem arduous and tasteless, drinking water is key to boosting productivity in the workplace. According to research conducted by the University of East London in 2013, this can be by as much as 14%. Staying hydrated can also help you focus when it comes to your workload.

If you’re someone who sits behind a desk all day, water goes a long way to helping prevent aching joints and muscle cramps. It can also increase your energy levels, improve your overall mood and strengthen your immune system.

With the suggested amount being between 6-8 glasses, drinking the right amount can feel like a challenge. If you’re wanting to increase how many glasses of water you drink a day, we’ve put together some of the best times to have a glass of H2O for maximum effect.

7:00am – Wake up

Wake yourself up with a glass of water to rehydrate your body after a long sleep. By doing this, you will give your body a boost of natural energy and help remove toxins which have built up from your body repairing overnight. Wait at least 30 minutes after this to have your breakfast, to reap the full benefits.

9:00-11:00am – Morning boost

When it comes to the start of the working day, enjoy a glass of water to get your mind focused. It can keep your body feeling hydrated and get you ready for the day ahead. Around 30 minutes before you go for lunch, have a glass of water. Drinking before a meal is said to aid digestion and can also help you feel fuller.

12:30pm – After a meal

Drinking a glass of water post-lunch can help your body absorb the nutrients from your meal. It can also make you feel more focused for the afternoon ahead.

2:00-5:00pm – Combat fatigue in the afternoons

If you’re starting to feel sluggish in the afternoon, freshen your mind with a glass of water. It’s important to keep hydrated throughout the working day, as it will help you feel more productive.

Drinking a glass of water before dinner can again aid your digestive process. It can also stop you from over-eating, as water can help you feel fuller and more satisfied.

9:30pm – Before bed

Help your body cycle through toxins during the night by drinking your last glass of water an hour or so before heading to bed. You’ll also reap the benefits of a better night’s sleep as your body will feel more hydrated.

The amount of water you drink throughout the day can go a long way to helping you feel refreshed and focused. You’ll also be more likely to consume the recommended daily intake of water if you pace yourself. The important thing to remember is to keep drinking – by focusing on how much you consume to begin with, it will soon become a habit rather than something you need to think about. Water is the secret ingredient to staying alert and focused in the office.
